WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- Before a huge crowd at Magic Jack Field on Saturday afternoon, the Palm Beach Atlantic University men’s soccer got what they were looking for: a National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) South Region Title. The Fish pleased the hundreds in attendance with a dominating 4-0 defeat to the hands of Southern Wesleyan University.
Matched up against the #2-seeded Warriors, PBA stayed true to their #1-seed as the victory over SWU pushed the season record for PBA to a solid 11-6-1.
The Fish opened up the scoring for the afternoon on a beautiful connection between junior’s Jonathan Clark and Cheyne Roberts. Just beyond the 16th minute of the first-half, Clark dribbled the ball into the box where he made a swift pass for a one touch goal from Roberts.
Earning a start in both games of the regional, Clark came away with his own goal in the 28th minute as a failed clearance by Southern Wesleyan resulted in another one move from Clark and then a shot to the back of the net that pushed PBA’s lead to 2-0.
That would be all the scoring either team would do in the first-half as PBA entered halftime with a 7-3 shots advantage while possessing the ball on their end of the field for much of the half.
The second-half would bring more opportunities for the Fish as senior Daniel Abrahamsohn, who had an outstanding tournament, collected a rebounded shot for the third goal in the 64th minute.
Junior Mark Cabrera capped the scoring for the day as the Lakeland, Florida native deposited a long blast in the back of the net on an assist from Roberts.
PBA out shot SWU 11-3 in the second-half as junior goalkeeper Joe Yurchak was tested for five saves in the contest while posting his second consecutive shutout. Mitch McKay took the loss in goal for Southern as the Warriors goalie tallied six saves.
With some time to prepare for the NCCAA National Tournament, the Fish will look to avenge last year’s near miss at the program’s first NCCAA National Title in men’s soccer as they fell to The Master’s College (Calif.) in last year’s national championship game in penalty kicks.
