CEDARVILLE, Ohio- Having been used to running the past few months outside day after day in warm weather temperatures, it was quite the adjustment for the Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s cross country team as they traveled to Cedarville, Ohio for the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) National Championship this weekend.
Battling freezing rain and high winds, PBA’s two runners were obviously up against some conditions they had never faced before when attempting to run the long distance race against some of the best competition in the nation.
Junior Gina Batista, the top PBA runner all season long, came away with a time of 24:08.25 in the women’s 5K while teammate Gloria Flores wasn’t far behind with a 28:55.29 time as both runners dealt with the tough conditions.
Batista’s time placed her 108th in the field while Flores came away with a finish of 133.
While obviously not in contention for the team title with only two runners representing the PBA squad, the runners did enjoy a solid finish to their season. Host school Cedarville University came away with the team title while CU senior Nicole Santos earn medalist honors with a time of 18.24.32, nearly a 12 second victory over Dallas Baptist’s Hannah Steffen at 18:33.53.
