ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla.- In their final regular season contest of the season, the Palm Beach Atlantic University men’s soccer team traveled to Flagler College on Saturday evening where they met a formidable foe in the Saints. FC tallied a pair of goals in each half as they battled to a 4-1 victory over the Fish.
With both teams desperately seeking a win to increase their hopes of a NCAA South Regional bid, it would be the Saints who would play a more inspired round of soccer as they improved to 10-5-2 on the season while PBA’s mark drops to 9-6-1.
A physical contest throughout, both teams exchanged blows in the opening minutes while establishing the pace of the game. FC opened up the scoring when Brad Vinciguerra slotted a pass through three PBA defenders to an open Conor Killeen who’s shot sailed past PBA goalkeeper Joe Yurchak for the game’s opening score at just under the 32nd minute mark of the first half.
Still determined to hold off the many Saints attacks, the Sailfish back line would continue to hold strong until just before halftime as Killeen found Eammon Murphy for the Saints second goal with just under three minutes left in the opening period of play.
It would once again be a Killeen to Murphy connection in half number two that put the game out of reach. Murphy tallied the goal 20 minutes into the half that seemed to deflate the Sailfish going into the final stages of the game.
Fredrik Ericsson tallied an unassisted goal for the Saints final score.
The Sailfish ended the shutout just a few minutes later as junior Cheyne Roberts found a streaking Kyle Crouse in the 87th minute although the goal proved to be to little to late.
The Fish will have the next few weeks away from game action as they will begin to prepare for the upcoming National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) South Regional which PBA will host beginning November 21st.
