WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- Jumping out to a quick lead, the Palm Beach Atlantic University men’s soccer took care of business down the stretch on Thursday evening as they downed visiting Clearwater Christian College by a final 4-2 tally. The victory gives the Sailfish a current unbeaten streak of four games heading into their final regular season home contest on Saturday.
The Fish connected for three goals in the first 27 minutes of action against the Cougars who entered tonight’s game with a similar 8-5-2 record as PBA.
Senior Chance Sumner and sophomore Kyle Crouse hooked up for a beautiful first goal for the Blue and White as Sumner slipped a short pass in the direction of a streaking Crouse who promptly placed his shot in the upper 90 to give the Fish their first goal of the game in the 13th minute.
Dominating early on in terms of possession, PBA junior Cheyne Roberts placed his corner kick near the mouth of the goal as the long ball made its way into the back of the net untouched for goal number two. The Fish came away with 13 corner kick opportunities in the first-half alone.
Just over five minutes later another PBA scoring attempt would ricochet to the feet of senior Daniel Abrahamsohn who quickly poked the ball back past the diving CCC keeper to give the Fish a comfortable 3-0 lead, a lead they would take into the half.
From a statistical standpoint, PBA dominated the first-half collecting 18 shots while the Cougars managed just one shot.
The Cougars would come out the second-half and continue to play inspired soccer as they produced two second-half goals to make the game more interesting.
The first CCC score came on a long free kick from Juan Robayo who found a wide open Keoni Haole for the goal in the 58th minute to get the Cougars on the board.
Both teams would continue to bat the ball around the field for the next 20 minutes or so until a breakdown from the PBA defense allowed Robayo to sail his corner kick towards teammate Lance Wild who closed the scoring gap to 3-2 with the goal.
Forced to buckle down, the Fish would put the game out of reach when senior Caleb Roberts blasted a ball off a throw-in past the CCC keeper with just over five minutes left to ice the game.
Without a number of players forced to miss Thursday’s action due to injury or other circumstances, the Fish were able to utilize some minutes for reserves such as freshman Jonathon Dupree, junior Roberto Salas, and less minutes for some PBA starters.
Faced with a great deal of shots, especially in the first-half, Clearwater goalkeeper Stephen Hutt made a number of solid saves and came away with eight saves in goal. PBA goalkeeper Joe Yurchak earned his ninth victory of the season and picked up three goalie saves.
PBA will close out their regular season home schedule on Saturday afternoon as they will play host to West Palm Beach rival Northwood University with a 1 pm afternoon contest. The game will be played at Magic Jack Field and their will be no admission charged.
