LANTANA, Fla.- Six Palm Beach Atlantic University senior women’s soccer players stepped on their home field for their last regular season contest of their collegiate careers on Friday evening and while their effort was high the end result came with a 3-1 St. Thomas University victory.
Tied at one goal apiece entering half-time in a close match, the Bobcats came away with two second-half goals while keeping the Sailfish offense at bay and came away the road victory.
STU opened the game with a quick strike as sophomore forward Shanoska Young, a native of Jamaica, blasted a long ball just to the right of the 18 that sailed over the out-stretched arms of PBA freshman goalkeeper Angela Poulos for the game’s opening score in the sixth minute of action.
PBA would respond with their own first-half goal when senior Jessica Rodriguez lofted a corner kick into the box as sophomore Angie Kuhn deposited the ball into the net via a header. The goal was Kuhn’s fifth of the season while Rodriguez collected her second assist.
Keeping things close in most statistical categories including a 6-6 shot count for each team in the first-half, it would be the Bobcats who would take the game away from the Fish in the second-half.
Frances Brlit, a senior from Sarasota, Florida and one of a number of strong midfield players for STU, received a Cindy Rivera pass and delivered with another long goal for the Cats, this time just before the 69th minute of the contest.
For good measure and bolstering their lead, STU reserve Janella Cobas beat the PBA defense off a throw-in and connected for all the insurance her team would need as they came away with a 3-1 victory over PBA.
Now 1-12-2 on the season, PBA will continue to try develop as they approach the upcoming NCCAA Regional tournament. The Fish will next take on NCAA Division I institution Houston Baptist University in Houston, Texas. Last season the Fish battled HBU to a 0-0 draw at the Flagler College Tournament in St. Augustine.
GAME NOTES: During halftime, PBA’s six senior members were honored in a ceremony that included joining their family and close friends at mid-field. Christina Ibanez, Lindsey Bates, Katy Birkhead, Jessica Rodriguez, Brandi Bianco, and Liz Kendig were all honored.
