LAKELAND, Fla.- Taking part in the annual Wilson/ITA regional championships at Florida Southern College, the Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s tennis team came away with some solid results as head coach Chi Ly traveled with three of his top returning players from last years squad.
Montse Ripoll, Lina Rubiano, and Natalie Aleman, all top players from last year’s NCCAA runner-up team, traveled with Ly to the regional tournament where they endured high temperatures and a field including many of the top players in Division II.
Ripoll, a sophomore in her second season from Mexico City, Mexico, took part in one of the toughest matches of the tournament as her battle with Saint Leo’s Jeanette McDonald lasted over three and a half hours. In the end however, Ripoll came out on top with a 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 victory.
Joining Ripoll as a first-round winner was Rubiano who took on Amber Arciero of Rollins College. Rubiano dominated from the on-set as she took the match in straight sets 6-0, 6-0.
Junior Natalie Aleman also faced a tough opponent in Valdosta State University player Tina Trautmann. Trautmann, who advanced to the tournament’s semi-finals, was able to slide past Aleman by the scores of 6-1, 6-2.
Facing the steamy temperatures of Lakeland, Ripoll and Rubiano both experienced health related issues as cramping and pure exhaustion came into play after their first-round victories.
Ripoll took on the University of West Florida’s Suzana Cavalcante in the second round where she fell 6-2, 6-1 to Cavalcante, who went on to win the entire tournament.
Rubiano was forced to retire in her second-round match as she was defeated by Lina Benkirane of Saint Leo University by the scores of 4-6, 6-2, 4-0 ret.
