VALDOSTA, Ga.- While the spring is the time when collegiate tennis is at its peak, the fall season can present its fair share of challenging and intriguing tournament. The Palm Beach Atlantic University men’s tennis team took part in their first competition of the fall over the weekend as they participated in the Wilson/ITA Regional Championship on the campus of Valdosta State University.
Having lost their top two players from a season ago to graduation in Brock Newton and Paul Segodo, the Sailfish were able to see the early play of some of their newcomers at the ITA Regional.
Krasimir Atanasov and Luke Bolanos each made their PBA debuts on the hard court while senior John Tilton also got in on the action as all three players traveled to the tournament alongside head coach Chi Ly.
Tilton opened up play for the Fish as he took on Florida Tech’s Joel Zahlan. Tilton came through with the opening-round victory as he won the match 6-1, 7-6 (5). Tilton ran into even stiffer competition in round number two as he squared off against North Alabama’s Jan Miskos who entered the tournament as the eighth seed. Miskos prevailed and moved on with a 6-1, 6-3 victory.
After receiving a bye in the opening round, Atanasov was paired up against Lynn Universities' Tomas Racak who was the tournament’s sixth overall seed. Racak came out on top with a 6-4, 6-1 win.
Bolanos also received a bye in his first round followed by a matchup versus North Alabama’s Zac Bereznicki who overtook Bolanos with a 6-3, 6-3 victory.
Each of the players received more court action later in the tournament as they were reseeded in the other draws.
Bolanos faired the best for PBA as he advanced to the third round before being defeated.
