LANTANA, Fla.- Taking on Barry University for the second time this season with this time enduring heavy rain fall, the Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s soccer team was unable to hold onto a 3-1 lead as they witnessed the Buccaneers score three unanswered goals including two in the second-half to take a hard-fought 4-3 victory Tuesday evening at Lantana Park.
“Tonight was a great indicator of the level our team is capable of playing this season,” said head coach James Kryger.
“However it also showed we are not ready all the way, which in itself is fine. in order for us to be ready and peak when the time is right we have to shore up our back line and a few decisions. The girls battled, when we do work it out we are going to be exciting to see,” continued Kryger.
After struggling to score in recent games, the Sailfish came out firing on all cylinders in the first-half as they jumped on the board when junior Lindsey Bates recovered a rebound shot and easily put the ball in the back of the net for her first goal of the season at the six minute mark.
The Bucs would respond with their first score of the evening on a smart pass from Holly Bain that made its way towards Emily Bourgoine for an easy Bucs’ goal. The initial pass to Bain came in via corner kick.
The Sailfish would also strike on a corner kick for the next goal as Jessica Rodriguez’s corner kick found its way to sophomore Angie Kuhn who passed off to teammate Katy Birkhead who promptly placed the ball into the back of the net at just under the 11th minute to give PBA a 2-1 advantage.
That advantage would grow to 3-1 when Kuhn struck again off a corner kick from Rodriguez in the 19th minute as Kuhn headed the ball past BU goalkeeper Sami Cromartie.
The Bucs struck for another goal in the 38th minute as Elana Brady was awarded a penalty kick after being taken down near the box, cutting the lead to 3-2 into intermission.
The second-half belonged to the Bucs as they tallied two goals while keeping the Fish off the scoreboard as they battled to a 4-3 victory.
BU forward Sarah Wolfer tied the contest nine minutes into the second half as she collected a loose ball around the Sailfish goal and punched it in for a 3-3 tie.
Michelle Tarasiuk came through with the game-winner in the 67th minutes on an assist from Allie Lleneres.
PBA goalkeeper Ashley Morrell dropped her seventh decision of the season while collecting six saves.
The Fish return to the pitch on Saturday, October 4th as they will host nationally-ranked Rollins College in a 5 pm showdown at Lantana Park.
