In the Life of a Fish: Angelica Torres
September 19, 2008
Sophomore defender Angelica Torres sheds some light on the season thus far for the Palm Beach Atlantic University women's team including their recent game against Northwood University. Torres is the latest PBA student-athlete to take part in the Sailfish blogs offered to readers this year.
Yesterday afternoon we had a game where we had to fight through the hot mid-day Florida heat. We were unable to get a win against our hometown rivals Northwood University but we played hard and that’s all I can ask for!
I had some apprehension going into the game knowing that Alex (A-Dawg) wasn’t going to be on the field because of her recent knee injury at Nova Southeastern. Without having her in the back meant that the team was going to have to go through a lineup change that many of us weren’t used to. We went into the game and started off hard. Playing man to man in defense was hard but we all were determined not to give up any easy shots or goals. The midfield did a great job yesterday dropping back and going forward to put pressure on Northwood’s defense. Angie Kuhn had a great game yesterday! She played a lot of beautiful through balls to our forwards and outside mids, but we were very unlucky not to get any goals from them. Kendig and Grace did amazing playing up top for us. I know it must have been hard to Kendig going into the game playing forward when she always played defense in the back with Regin, but she had an awesome game with Grace up top.
J-RO did a great job as well with Angie in the middle. My props go up to all the girls that played defense with me yesterday! I’m so happy that we kept our heads up the whole game and left everything out on the field. Ibz, Brandi and Ashley I know it was hard playing through the heat but you girls did a great job yesterday afternoon. I’m glad I had you guys back there with me!!
Game Details: Northwood scored first in the first half that was followed by a PK goal by Brandi Bianco (“BB” as coach would say!). That left the score 1-1 at half time. We were all determined 2nd half to win the game. We gave everything we had but we just couldn’t come up with the goals to win the game. In 2nd half Northwood scored twice leaving the final score 3-1.
God has put a lot of obstacles in our way early in the season. Between the new coach, new freshmen, injuries and trying to balance school work with everything I say its been really tough. However, I feel like God would never give us more that we can handle. We just have to keep on going and have faith that God will get us through. We have to learn from the trials and tribulations we go through because God has a purpose in them. We might not enjoy it, but when its all said and done, enduring trials faithfully will produce perseverance, character and hope. We can truly trust in God who loves us with an everlasting love because he knows the direction we need to go, and only HE knows exactly how to get us there!
***Romans 15:13- May the God of hope fill you with joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.***
Never give up girls, continue to have hope!! I love you all…and I cant wait to see what God has in store for all of us this season!!
