CLEVELAND, Miss.- Continuing their recent string of solid play, the Palm Beach Atlantic University men’s soccer team took on Delta State University on Thursday afternoon and came away with a solid 2-1 victory. The Sailfish now improve to 4-1 on the season with another big game slated for Saturday against Christian Brothers University.
Senior Dan Dodge continued to lead the Fish from an offensive standpoint as he collected both goals that helped PBA earn their second straight victory.
A defensive presence during most of his career in the blue and white, Dodge has adjusted well to the move up front which has seen him tally three goals and an assist in his last two contests, both Sailfish victories.
“We continued to grow tonight with our play and I thought it was a great overall effort by our guys,” said fourth-year head coach Jose Gomez.
“After getting two early goals like we did tonight, we have to learn to continue to push our opponent because tonight evidenced what we’ve been doing lately and that’s allowing our opposition to stay in the game and keep things close. Closing out games is where we must improve,” said Gomez after the hard-fought victory.
Dodge got things started for PBA just under three minutes into the game as a pass from junior Cheyne Roberts came to the feet of Dodge who swiftly put the ball into the back of the net for the game’s first goal.
As mentioned earlier the Sailfish would strike again quickly as Dodge landed goal number two of the evening at the eight minute mark putting the Fish up 2-0.
Other than a penalty kick that was missed by the Fish that would do it as far as strong scoring opportunities go.
Delta State came through with a penalty kick of their own in the 40th minute as David Horstmann delivered the Statesman with their only score of the afternoon. PBA outshot DSU 10-5 while earning six corner kicks to the Statesman’s two corner kicks. PBA junior goal keeper Joe Yurchak collected two saves for the Fish.
The loss dropped DSU to 5-2-1 and snapped their six game unbeaten streak.
PBA continues their Southern states swing with another key Region contest as they take on Christian Brothers University on Saturday, September 20th at 3 pm (CST).
