Lady Sailfish Compete in First Race of 2008

MELBOURNE, Fla.- Battling the heat and muggy conditions of the south Florida weather, the Palm Beach Atlantic University women’s cross country team took part in their first race of the 2008 season under new head coach Staci LaForte. With a roster that includes many new faces, the Sailfish came through with some solid results.
Newcomer Gina Battista was the top PBA runner to finish in the Florida Tech Invitational as she placed 30th in the women’s 5K race with a time of 22:54.
A native of Lilburn, Georgia, Battista took part in her very first race as a PBA runner.
Following up Battista’s solid time was two-sport standout Kelly Schwartz as she ran in a time of 24:16 good for 36th placed. Following right behind was Jennifer Congdon who tallied a time of 24:20, right behind Scwartz for 37th in the race.
Other PBA runners finishing the race were Lina Rubiano (26:27), Gloria Flores (27:33.0), and Montserrat Ripoll (30:52).
As a team, PBA finished sixth in the event with Embry-Riddle University taking home top honors followed by Nova Southeastern University and Florida Southern College.
Florida Southern’s Carolyne Kwambai took home medalist honors with an impressive 18:25 time, a 12 second lead over second-place finisher Krystal Porter of Nova Southeastern.
PBA will participate in their second meet of the season on Saturday, September 20th when they take part in the Smoothie King Invitational. The race is scheduled to start at 7:30 am.
