WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- After a solid opening weekend trip to Colorado which saw the Palm Beach Atlantic University men’s soccer team pick up two key victories, the Sailfish returned home on Wednesday night to square off against their first regional opponent in Eckerd College. As they seemed to in recent years, the Tritons continued to have the Sailfish number as they battled to a 4-2 victory.
Spoiling the PBA home opener at Magic Jack Field, the Tritons came into halftime trailing 2-1 but instead of sulking, EC stormed back to score three unanswered goals in the second period and earn a much needed win. EC entered the contest with a 1-1 record after being trounced 5-0 by 18th ranked Lander University on Sunday afternoon.
An up and down game throughout, the Tritons jumped on the board in the 15th minute as Alex Patterson lofted a long pass over the Sailfish defense to an open Luke Sheekey who connected for a shot over the head of PBA goalkeeper Joe Yurchak.
Twelve minutes later after a few unsuccessful attempts at their first goal, the Sailfish connected when senior Chance Sumner received a pass from teammate Cheyne Roberts. Sumner blasted the ball through the left side of the goal to knot the scoring at one goal apiece.
Sumner would strike again just before intermission, this time on an unassisted goal from just beyond the 18. Leading 2-1 entering halftime, the momentum appeared firmly in the grasps of the Fish.
Sheekey would strike again for his second goal of the night in the 63rd minute as he blasted a free kick straight over the head of Yurchak to tie the score at two. Less than three minutes later it was Sheekey a third time, once again from Patterson as his shot from the right-side near the goal bounced off a PBA defender and gave the Tritons a lead they would not relinquish.
Leaving the Sailfish fans and players somewhat shocked, EC put the game away by notching a fourth and final goal in the 83rd minute as freshman Dan Parker headed in a goal on a pass from none other than Luke Sheekey.
From a statistical standpoint, the Sailfish held the advantage in nearly every area as they totaled seven corner kicks to the Tritons two and a 16-12 shots advantage. In the end however the Tritons would put more points on the board and exit West Palm Beach with a victory.
EC keeper Domenic Spedaliere earned the victory while the loss for Yurchak dropped the junior PBA goal keeper to 2-1 on the year.
After a busy first week, the Sailfish will take the remainder of the week off and prepare for another tough upcoming region game as they will take on Florida Tech on Saturday, September 13th at 4 pm.
