PUEBLO, Colo.- Led by six different scorers and an effective defensive effort, the Palm Beach Atlantic University men’s soccer team came through in dominant fashion on Saturday afternoon as they rocked Colorado State University at Pueblo to the tune of a 7-1 season-opening victory.
After nearly three weeks of grueling pre-season practices and the start of classes at PBA, the men’s soccer team was finally able to test their strength in the light air of the Rocky Mountains on Saturday. In the midst of a two-game swing in Colorado, the Fish will next take on the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs on Monday in a Labor Day showdown at 1 pm (MST).
After a very competitive first 15 minutes of action from both squads, the Sailfish found their rhythm and the goals would follow. A blowout in terms of the final score, but the Sailfish only outshot the Thunderwolves by a 15-11 tally.
Junior mid-fielder Cheyne Roberts paced the Sailfish attack with two goals on the afternoon while the rest of the scoring load was balanced amongst a host of other talented players returning to the pitch this season for head coach Jose Gomez.
“I think overall as the game progressed that we started to find our rhythm as a unit,” said Gomez.
“Obviously this is a great result having scored seven goals but we also saw some areas we can work on to become better. We are excited for Monday’s game and getting back out there again,” continued Gomez who is entering his fourth season at the helm of the PBA men’s soccer program.
Other player’s making their mark in the season opener from a scoring standpoint were senior Daniel Abrahamsohn who tallied a goal and an assist as well as goals from fellow senior Trent Hammon, Chance Sumner, Josh Sharpe, and newcomer Nick Rasek.
Junior Juan Villagrana also made his Sailfish debut after sitting out last season as a transfer and was credited with an assist in the opener. Junior keeper Joe Yurchak earned the victory in goal for PBA.
All players that were on the travel roster saw game action on Saturday for PBA.
Now 1-0 to start the season, the Sailfish will take Sunday off before preparing for Monday’s bout with UCCS and then home to face Eckerd College on Wednesday.
