NEW YORK, N.Y.- Former Palm Beach Atlantic men's soccer standout Lucas Coutinho has found a new home in the Big Apple since leaving the Sailfish, as he signed with the New York Cosmos of the North American Soccer League (NASL) last week.
“I'm just really thankful for the opportunity to keep playing the game I love in this country that has opened so many doors for me the past five years,” said Coutinho. “I want to thank God first and foremost, without Him none of this would be possible, I always believed He had a plan for me, even when things didn't seem to go my way. I also can not forget to thank my family and friends who have always been there for me. Also, want to thank my agents, the Palm Beach Atlantic staff, and my PBA teammates.” Coutinho also added that he is “thankful to the New York Cosmos for making my dreams come true. This team has such a rich history, and I am honored to start my professional career here as a member of the Cosmos.”
The NASL is sanctioned by U.S. Soccer as the Division II league under Major League Soccer (MLS).
While Coutinho has officially signed with the Cosmos first team, they currently do not have any international spots available at the moment, so Coutinho has been loaned to the Cosmos B of the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL).
The NPSL currently has no given official designation by US Soccer, but NPSL teams can qualify for the U.S. Open Cup through the United States Adult Soccer Association (USASA).
While he was a member of the Sailfish, Coutinho scored a combined 25 goals, dishing out 38 assists for 88 career total points. The Recife, Brazil collected plenty of honors in his career with PBA, as he was named to a combined four All-America teams and four All-South Region First Teams.
“As a coach, I could not be more proud of Lucas,” said head coach Brian McMahon. “While many will see from the outside his athletic ability and accomplishments, the most impressive thing to me is how humble he is for everything he has been given. I am beyond excited to see that the New York Cosmos signed him. They truly are getting a great person as well as a player.”
