Sailfish Split Final Day Of Regular Season, Take Series From Barry

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.- The Sailfish and Buccaneers split their doubleheader on the final day of the 2017 regular season, with Barry (23-28) taking the first game of the day 6-2, while Palm Beach Atlantic (32-17) took the finale 12-4.
Kayla Knight had an impressive day at the plate as the senior went 6-for-8 on the day while driving in two runs and scoring four times, and Maddie Bertisch finished the day 5-for-7 at the plate while driving in two runs.
The 2017 Sailfish regular season is now officially in the books and they will find out their NCAA Tournament fate on Monday, May 8th. In the latest NCAA region poll, the ‘Fish were No. 7 in the South Region, with eight teams from each region getting selected.
GAME ONE: PBA 2, Barry 6
The Buccaneers had their way with the Sailfish in the middle matchup of the weekend series, as they held the Sailfish offense to just two runs on seven hits.
Barry jumped out to an early lead, scoring four runs in the bottom of the second. The got their runs on a four-pitch walk, followed by three consecutive singles, a double, and then a fielder’s choice.
The Sailfish were unable to score until the top of the fifth inning when Hannah Carlton scored on a passed ball, putting the ‘Fish behind 4-1.
The Buccaneers responded with two more runs of their own in the sixth inning as Buccaneer centerfielder Lynsey Duncan ripped a two-RBI single to put them out in front 6-1.
The ‘Fish scored one last run as Knight came in to score on a Bucs throwing error after reaching on her 11th double of the year.
The Sailfish were unable to keep the momentum going in the top of the seventh and fell 6-2.
GAME TWO: PBA 12 Barry 4 (Five Innings)
Loren Kilgore got the offensive party started for the Sailfish with her pinch-hit grand slam in the top of the third as the ‘Fish scored five in the inning to jump out in front 5-1.
The Sailfish scored another three runs in the top of the fourth to jump ahead 8-2. Following a Claudia Pizzarelli walk and a Knight single, Magnolia West grounded out bringing in Pizzarelli to make it 6-2. After Kilgore walked, Bertisch singled down the left field line scoring Knight to extend the ‘Fish lead to 7-2. The final run of the inning came in as Alexis Guerra scored on a sacrifice fly from Shelby Wood.
The Sailfish offense was not done there as they scored another four runs in the top of the fifth as well. Knight drove in a pair of runs on her NCAA-leading 12th triple of the year, and come in to score on West’s single 76th base hit of the season. West scored the 12th and final run for the Sailfish on Bertisch’s third hit of the game.
The Buccaneers scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but Ashton Adkins got the Sailfish out of the inning as they won 12-4 in five innings courtesy of the mercy rule.
In the circle for the ‘Fish, Nikki Brinegar (W, 11-5) tossed four innings while striking out a pair of Buccaneers and Adkins worked an inning in relief.
