Adkins Tosses No-Hitter in 2-0 Win Over No.16 Tampa

TAMPA, Fla.- The Sailfish open their three-game weekend set with a 2-0 win over the Tampa Spartans to improve their record to 24-14.
Ashton Adkins (W,14-5) tossed the sixth no-hitter in Palm Beach Atlantic’s history since joining NCAA Division II, and her no-hitter Friday night is the first since Feb. 2, 2011, by Chris Donovan against Northwood University. The junior struck out five on the night, retired nine courtesy of a fly out and seven on groundouts. The Hawthrone, Fla. native walked three batters in the game, while tossing perfect innings in the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth.
The Sailfish put together 12 hits in the ballgame, scoring just a pair of runs, with both runs for coming in the top of the fifth inning. With Maddie Biggs on second base, Kayla Knight ripped her NCAA DII leading ninth triple of the year to center field to score Biggs and put the ‘Fish up 1-0. Magnolia West followed with a single of her own, driving in Knight to put the ‘Fish up 2-0.
West finished Friday night 3-4 at the plate with an RBI, as she was one of five Sailfish with multiple hit performances on the night. Michaela Hynes, Maddie Bertisch, Claudia Pizzarelli, and Biggs each finished with a pair of hits.
The Sailfish return to action tomorrow, April 8 at Naimoli Family Stadium as they finish their three-game series with the Spartans in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
