WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Sailfish offense only mustered up two runs Friday night, but they were all that were needed as Palm Beach Atlantics (21-14) defeated Florida Southern College (13-17) 2ithe series opener at Simpson Field.
Both Sailfish runs came off the bat of Michaela Hynes in the bottom of the fourth inning as the junior singled in two runs on a shot to right center field.
Trailing 1-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth, Loren Kilgore led off the inning with a single to left center and was followed by Magnolia West who singled through the right side, advancing Kilgore to third. After West stole second, Hynes delivered her clutch single that plated both runners, giving PBA their 2-1 lead. The Sailfish offense was held hitless prior to Kilgore’s single in the fourth.
Nikki Brinegar (W, 6-5) pitched 4.2 innings in the circle for the Sailfish, striking out four batters while allowing just the one earned run.
With the ‘Fish leading 2-1 in the top of the fifth, the Moccasins worked their way to get runners on the corners with two outs, threatening to tie or take the lead. The Sailfish turned to Jana Wagner out of the bullpen, and the junior struck out the first batter she saw, shutting the door on the Mocs in the fifth.
The Wadsworth, Ill. native continued to dominate the Mocs, as she tossed a perfect sixth and seventh to pick up her first save of the season. In 2.1 innings of work, the junior struck out four of the seven batters she faced.
Kilgore and Kayla Knight added the final two Sailfish hits of the ballgame in the bottom of the fifth but were stranded on base.
The Sailfish return to action tomorrow, Saturday, April 1 for a doubleheader with the Moccasins to conclude their three-game series. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1:00 p.m., and can be watched live courtesy of the Sailfish Sports Network.
