WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Sailfish and Fighting Knights split their doubleheader Tuesday evening as Palm Beach Atlantic (20-14) took the opener 5-4 in strange walk-off fashion while dropping the rubber match of the series to Lynn University (20-13) 6-2.
The Sailfish capitalized on back-to-back wild pitches in the bottom of the seventh inning to win the opening game of the day before their offense was held to just four hits in the finale.
The Sailfish return to action on Friday, March 31 as they host Florida Southern College for a three-game weekend series. Game one will be held Friday night at 6 p.m., with games two and three being in doubleheader form on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
GAME ONE: PBA 5, Lynn 4
Trailing the Fighting Knights 4-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh, Michaela Hynes delivered a one-out single to center field that scored Magnolia West to tie the ballgame at 4. With Hynes standing on second base, back-to-back wild pitches allows the junior to score, giving the Sailfish the 5-4 win.
After the Fighting Knights jumped on the board first to take a 1-0 lead, the Sailfish tied things up in the bottom of the fourth as Hannah Carlton flew out to left field to score Hynes on a sacrifice fly. Hynes gave the ‘Fish their first lead of the afternoon in the bottom of the fifth on a two-out, two-RBI single to left center.
The Sailfish lead would not hold for long, as the Fighting Knights strung together five consecutive base hits to score three runs to jump out in front 4-3 in the top of the sixth.
Jana Wagner (W, 3-3) got the ‘Fish out of the jam in the sixth, and kept the Lynn bats quiet in the seventh, allowing the Sailfish to work the comeback win in the bottom of the seventh.
Nikki Brinegar pitched well for the Sailfish through the first five innings before running into the trouble in the sixth. The Southpaw allowed four runs on the day, but only one prior to her sixth inning.
GAME TWO: PBA 2, Lynn 6
The Fighting Knights quickly shook off the walk-off loss as they struck for two runs in the top of the first inning and added a third run in the top of the second to quickly take a three-run lead in the finale.
The Sailfish picked up their first hit of the game in the bottom of the third as Kayla Knight singled back to the pitcher. Loren Kilgore followed suit with a single of her own, smashing one to center field. After both runners moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt, Hynes delivered again, singling to right field, bringing home both Knight and Kilgore to bring the ‘Fish within a run.
Any Sailfish comeback chance became flatlined in the top of the fifth inning as Elizabeth Diaz crushed a two-out, three-run pinch-hit home run to put the Fighting Knights out in front 6-2.
Kilgore also picked up a double in the bottom of the sixth inning, the fourth and final hit for the Sailfish on the night.
