Sailfish Fall In Series Opener To Fighting Knights At Home

West Palm Beach Fla.- Palm Beach Atlantic softball dropped the opener to crosstown rivals Lynn University 5-3 Monday night at the Rinker Athletic Campus. The loss is the first for the Sailfish to the Fighting Knights since March 1, 2015. With the loss, the Sailfish are now 19-13 on the year.
Both teams had scoring chances in the first few innings, but Lynn struck first in the top of the third inning. The Fighting Knights scored two runs off of two hits in their half of the inning to take an early 2-0 lead.
An inning and a half later, the Sailfish responded with a rally of their own, scoring three runs on three hits and two Fighting Knight errors.
Michaela Hynes got the inning going for the Sailfish with a leadoff single. An error and sacrifice bunt later, Brianna Skipper delivered a pinch-hit RBI single to give the ‘Fish their first run of the game. With runners on the corners, Claudia Pizzarelli took off for second base on a stolen base attempt which was thrown away by the Lynn catcher, allowing Liz Albertini to score the tying run of the ballgame. Maddie Bertisch capped off the inning for the ‘Fish with a single to center that drove in Pizzarelli, putting the Sailfish out in front, 3-2.
Lynn wasted no time retaliating, as they regained the lead the following half inning. With two outs and a runner on, Leanne Wright crushed a two-run homer to left field to put the Fighting Knights back out on top, 4-3.
Victoria Rios put the icing on the cake for the Fighting Knights in the top of the seventh, as she doubled to left center driving in the fifth and final Lynn run of the game.
Despite the loss, Ashton Adkins (L, 12-5) tied her season-high in strikeouts with six on the night. The junior also did not walk a batter in the contest.
Both teams return to Simpson Field for a doubleheader that is scheduled for a game one first pitch of 4:00 p.m.
