No. 49 Sailfish Sweep Eckerd For First Conference Win

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – One day after their winning streak was snapped, the No. 49 Palm Beach Atlatnic men’s tennis team got back in the win column with a 9-0 sweep of Eckerd College. The win is the first for the Sailfish in Sunshine State Conference play.
The ‘Fish (11-4, 1-2 SSC) picked up four of their six singles wins in straight sets and didn’t surrender more than four games in any of the three doubles matches. The sweep by the Sailfish is the second of the season, the other coming on March 1 against Rose-Hulman in Orlando.
Pato Zarazua returned to the top spot in the lineup and evened his record at 7-7 in a three-setter against Victor Appelqvist. Appelqvist took the first set 6-4 before Zarazua came back to win the second 7-5 and eventually the third, 10-5. Down at number six Carlos Menesses picked up the win over Connor Masella, also in three sets, 6-2, 6-7 (3-7), 10-5.
Freshman Bernardo Ferreira picked up his team-leading 11th victory of the season, defeating Will Stone 6-2, 6-1. Rafael Lenz and Philipp Hoffmann each picked up win No. 9 of the year as Lenz defeated Eddie Lewis 6-4, 6-1 and Hoffmann cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win. Pietro de Silva climbed to 7-6 on the year with a 6-2, 6-3 win at flight number five
In doubles play the ‘Fish won 8-4 at both number one and number three as the duos of Lenz/Ferreira and Hoffmann/Thomas Salmon earned the victories. At number two doubles it was Zarazua/de Silva winning 8-2.
The Sailfish will host No. 2 Barry University on Thursday, March 30 at 3 p.m. in a match that was rescheduled from March 3 when the teams were rained out in the middle of doubles play. Thursday’s match will be started from the beginning.
