Sailfish Take Games Two And Three Saturday to Sweep The Eagles

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.- For the first time in their Division II history, Palm Beach Atlantic softball swept the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Eagles in a three-game series. After taking game one Friday night 6-4, the Sailfish (19-12) took games two and three 5-2 and 5-3 Saturday afternoon from the Eagles (18-18).
Kayla Knight finished the day reaching base all eight times she stepped to the plate Saturday afternoon. She officially went 4-for-5 on the day, while walking once, getting hit by a pitch twice, and reaching on an error. The senior also scored three runs on the day.
The Wauchula, Fla. native broke a Palm Beach Atlantic softball single-season record in the top of the fourth inning in game two Saturday as she led off the inning with her seventh triple of the season, moving her past Kara Anderson, who hit six triples in a season twice as a Sailfish.
The Sailfish finally return home after 15-game road trip this Monday night, March 27 as they host cross-county rival Lynn University at Simpson Field, with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m.
Game One: PBA 5, ERAU 2
After taking six innings to score a run in the opener on Friday night, the ‘Fish wasted no time hitting the scoreboard Saturday afternoon taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Loren Kilgore got the inning started off with a single to left field, and late came in to score on Michaela Hynes’ single up the middle.
The Eagles responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first, courtesy of back-to-back singles to start off the inning, and later added the second run on a bases-loaded walk.
The ‘Fish added three runs in the top of the third inning as they capitalized on a hit batter, two singles, two errors, and a fielders choice in the inning to jump back ahead 4-2.
Maddie Bertisch added an insurance run in the top of the fifth as she delivered with a two-out single, scoring Hynes to give the ‘Fish a 5-2 advantage.
In the circle, Nikki Brinegar (W, 5-5) pitched six innings of relief as the southpaw allowed just four Eagle hits while shutting them out on the day.
Game Two: PBA 5, ERAU 3
The Sailfish struck first in the finale, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Claudia Pizzarelli led off the third with a single to right field. After advancing to second and reaching third base on an Eagles error, she came in to score on the next play as Bertisch stole second, allowing Pizzarelli to score on the throw.
After Knight led off the top of the fourth inning with her seventh triple of the year, Shelby Wood drove her home with a single to third. Later in the inning with the bases loaded, Bertisch singled through the left side driving in Hannah Carlton. The Sailfish scored their final run of the inning on an Alexis Guerra sacrifice fly that scored Maddie Biggs.
The Eagles got a run back in their half of the fourth inning as Eagles left fielder Kailah Rain drove in a run.
The Blue and White led off the top of the fifth inning with back to back doubles from Knight and Hynes, later allowing Knight to come around and score on a sacrifice bunt from Biggs.
The Eagles added a run in the fifth and sixth innings of the game to bring them within two runs, but the Sailfish hung on ito win 5-3 and complete the sweep.
Ashton Adkins (W, 12-4) picked up her second complete-game win of the weekend. The junior struck out four batters and did not allow a single walk on the day.
