ORLANDO, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic women’s tennis was unable to come away with a neutral court win on Friday evening, falling to Arkansas Tech by the narrowest of margins, 5-4.
The ‘Fish (9-8) took two of the three doubles matches, losing only at number three by an 8-6 score. PBA was playing without Romina Bolagay in the lineup and that meant shuffling the lineup at that number three position. Bolagay and Michaela Mignemi have posted a 12-3 record mainly in that spot but with Bolagay out it was Mignemi paired with Michala Burns and they were unable to pick up a victory in their first match together this season, losing to Vandella Suico and Maria Vlaskina.
The other two doubles matches were lopsided as the ‘Fish picked up an 8-3 victory at number one and an 8-1 decision at number two. Valerie Nagovitcina and Taylor Conti improved to 3-0 this season together at number one while Maja Jovic and Leoni Polzin picked up their first win together in their first pairing of the season.
The match came down to the final singles flight as both PBA and Arkansas Tech (11-4) were tied at 4-4. In that final singles flight, number six, PBA’s Florencia Roncatti took the opening set 6-4 over Vlaskina. The Golden Suns’ Vlaskina took the second 6-0 to force a third and deciding set. In the end it was Vlaskina who came away with the victory in a very tight third, 7-5, to give the match to ATU.
For the Sailfish, Conti and Mignemi picked up singles victories with Mignemi cruising to a 6-2, 6-0 victory, her team-leading 12th of the season. Conti improved to 9-7 on the season with a 6-4, 6-3 win at number three.
PBA returns home to the Mitch Gornto Tennis Center for a 2:30 p.m. match against Eckerd College on Sunday. The Sailfish will honor their three seniors before the match, Dezi Bowman, Maja Jovic and Valerie Nagovitcina.
