HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – Palm Beach Atlantic women’s tennis evened their record at 5-5 after a pair of wins on Thursday at the Spring Tennis Fest.
PBA is 3-2 during their trip after Thursday’s sweep including their first 9-0 sweep of the season. The Sailfish close out their South Carolina trip on Friday, taking on Ashland University at 10:00 a.m.
PBA 5, Michigan Tech 4
Palm Beach Atlantic took over five hours but finally were able to put away the Huskies (10-9) on Thursday morning. The ‘Fish took two of the three doubles matches before winning number three, four and six singles.
All three doubles matches were tight but it was Valerie NAgovitcina and Leoni Polzin who pulled out the win at the number one position, 8-6. Romina Bolagay and Michaela Mignemi won at number three by the same 8-6 score.
Mignemi and Bolagay each picked up a win in singles play as well with Bolagay bouncing back from dropping the opening set. Mignemi won easily in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0 at number six while Bolagay was pushed to the edge at number four. After being shutout in the opening set, 6-0, Bolagay rallied to win the second 6-4 and the third 10-6 over Vicky Quinde.
Taylor Conti was also a winner in singles play and like Mignemi needed only two sets to win over Sandra Cvetanovic, 6-3, 6-2. Conti and Mignemi were the only singles matches to go two sets on the day. All three of the singles matches the ‘Fish lost finished by a third set score of 10-8.
PBA 9, Brevard 0
The Sailfish closed out the day with a sweep of the short-handed Tornadoes from Brevard. After having virtually no rest between the matches the ‘Fish used this match to get Florencia Roncatti and Dezi Bowman into the lineup, with both picking up their first wins of the year.
PBA dropped only three games in singles play with Bolagay, Mignemi and Bowman all picking up 6-0, 6-0 victories. Bolagay made her second appearance at the second spot in the lineup, improving to 2-0 while Mignemi played at number three for the first time. This was Bowman’s first appearance of the season.
Also in singles play, Nagovitcina earned a 6-1, 6-0 win playing at her customary number one spot. Roncatti made just her second appearance in the lineup this season, winning 6-2, 6-0 over Carmen Boone.
In doubles it was two unfamiliar teams that picked up victories for the Sailfish. Polzin partnered with Taylor Conti and Jovic was paired with Bowman as both sets earned victories by the same 8-1 score.
Brevard only had five players so PBA won six singles and three doubles by default.
