Softball Splits Monday Doubleheader With Shorter

ROME, Ga.- Palm Beach Atlantic softball split their Monday afternoon doubleheader with the Shorter University Hawks to start their spring break road trip through Georgia.

The ‘Fish (12-9) took the opener 2-1 as Ashton Adkins went the distance in the circle for the eighth time this year, improving her record to 8-2 on the season.

Shorter's Kameron Carter homered twice as the Hawks (15-8) slugged their way past the ‘Fish in game two, 10-1.

The Sailfish continue their trip in Georgia on Wednesday, March 8 as they travel to Columbus, Ga. to take on Columbus State University for a doubleheader. Game one on Wednesday is scheduled for a noon first pitch.

Game One: PBA 2, Shorter 1

Brianna Skipper got the Sailfish on the scoreboard first in the top of the second inning when she blasted a leadoff home run to left field. The homer is Skipper’s first as a Sailfish, and only her fourth RBI on the season.

Palm Beach Atlantic added their insurance run in the top of the third inning. After reaching on a single to right field and advancing to second on a wild pitch, Claudia Pizzarelli came in to score on Magnolia West’s eight double of the season. The RBI is the Carmichael, Calif. native’s team-leading 16th on the season.

The Hawks cut the lead in half in their half of the fifth inning as Tiffany Holland delivered a two-out single with two runners on to bring home Taylor Martin.

After allowing the run in the fifth, Adkins recovered and retired the side in the sixth, and only allowed one runner in the seventh to finish the game. The junior did not walk a batter on the afternoon, and induced 13 fly outs and seven groundouts.

Game Two: PBA 1, Shorter 10

Carter connected on her first of two home runs of the game in the first inning, sending a two-run shot to left to jump out ahead 2-0.

The Hawks offense exploded in the second inning, torching the Sailfish pitching for six runs on five hits, including two Sailfish errors to jump out ahead 8-0 after two.

The lone Sailfish run came in the top of the fifth inning as Skipper came in to score on a Hawks error after leading off the inning with a double.

The Hawks won it in the bottom of the sixth when Carter connected on her second two-out, two-run homer of the game, ending the game 10-1.

The Sailfish were held to just four hits in the game, with Skipper and Kayla Knight delivering doubles and West and Shelby Wood coming up with singles.
