HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – Palm Beach Atlantic women’s tennis spent over five hours on the court in their opening match of their Spring Break Trip on Sunday evening, eventually falling 5-3 to No. 35 Northwood.
The ‘Fish (2-4) got off to a good start by taking two of the three doubles matches but managed just one win in singles play. One match was unfinished as Michaela Mignemi and Kate Berestovenko were tied at one set each at the six spot when the team match was decided.
Mignemi teamed with Romina Bolagay in doubles play and held off Tetyana Pavych and Anastasiia Kazub, 9-8, to improve to 4-2 on the season. Valerie Nagovitcina and Leoni Polzin had an easier time at number one doubles, winning 8-5 over Carol Arnez-Mercado and Anna Aniskina.
Polzin was the lone winner on the night in singles play, picking up her second win of the season. She defeated Olesia Riabchuk in straight sets 6-4, 7-5 to keep PBA alive in the match, giving the ‘Fish a 3-2 lead at the time. The Timberwolves (16-0) won at number three, four and five singles to secure the match.
PBA has a short turnaround as they are scheduled to hit the court again on Monday against Chowan University at noon.
