Adkins Shuts Out Eckerd In Series Opening Win

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.- Ashton Adkins pitched a one-hit shutout in a 1-0 victory Friday night in the series opener against the Eckerd College Tritons.
Adkins and Nikole Van Gennep matched each other inning for inning until the Sailfish struck first in the top of the seventh. Maddie Biggs got things going for the ‘Fish with a one-out single to left field. Hannah Carlton replaced Biggs as a pinch runner, and became the game-winning run two batters later as she scored on a two-out Tritons error.
Adkins only allowed two base runners on her way to earning her sixth win of the season. The junior walked the leadoff batter of the second inning, and allowed a leadoff single in the fourth inning, pitching five perfect innings on the night.
The Sailfish put together five hits on the night, with Claudia Pizzarelli recording the only two-hit performance.
Before the seventh inning, the Sailfish got a runner to second in the top of the fifth but were unable to drive in the run.
With the win, Palm Beach Atlantic now sits at 10-7 as the Tritons fall to 8-14.The Sailfish return to action tomorrow as they complete the series in a doubleheader against the Tritons, with game one scheduled for a 1 p.m. first pitch.
