Sailfish Split Day Two, Take Series From Tars

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- After taking game one from Rollins College 7-0 in the series opener Friday night, the Sailfish (9-7) and Tars (7-8) split games two and three, giving PBA the series win. Rollins took game one in a pitchers duel and the ‘Fish capitalized on a three-run 5th inning to take game two and secure the series win.
Magnolia West finished 4-for-5 on the day while also being intentionally walked twice, reaching base six times in the doubleheader. The Freshman finished the weekend 8-for-9 at the plate. West scored two runs of her own on the day, both coming in the finale.
The Sailfish return to action Friday, March 3rd as they hit the road to take on the Eckerd College Tritons in a three-game set in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Game One: PBA 1, RC 2
Rollins jumped on the board in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead courtesy of two singles and a sacrifice fly.
It took the ‘Fish until the bottom of the fourth inning to equalize the ballgame as Brianna Skipper drilled a two-out triple to deep center, driving in Loren Kilgore.
After getting a runner on base in the top of the sixth, the Tars capitalized on a Sailfish error to jump ahead 2-1 in the opener.
Ashton Adkins (L, 5-2) took the loss, pitching the complete game. The junior struck out a pair while only walking one.
Game Two: PBA 4, RC 3
West got the offense going for the ‘Fish in game two as she picked up a two-out double in the bottom of the first, later scoring on a single to right center from Kilgore.
Rollins tied the contest in the top of the third as the Tars drove in a runner via a sacrifice fly to left. Rollins later took a 3-1 lead in the top of the fifth innings as they scored two runs on three hits and one PBA error.
The Sailfish offense wasted no time in responding to the Tars, putting up a three-spot in the bottom of the fifth. Knight led off the inning with a triple to right center, her fifth of the season. Following a Maddie Bertisch single and an intentional walk to West, Michaela Hynes singled in Knight to bring the ‘Fish within a run. Alexis Guerra followed suit with a single of her own, scoring West and Bertisch to the Sailfish out in front 4-3.
Jana Wagner pitched 4.1 innings in the finale, allowing just four hits while picking up a strikeout. Nikki Brinegar (W, 3-3) pitched 2.2 innings in relief, striking out a pair while not allowing a run to score.
