ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla.- Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish softball team (7-6) picked up a doubleheader sweep Sunday afternoon to close out the final day of the 2017 Flagler Classic. The Sailfish were dominant from both sides of the ball picking up the sweep, as Jana Wagner pitched a 3-hit shutout in the opener, and the offense scored six runs in the finale to complete the sweep.

Senior Kayla Knight had an impressive day overall at the plate, finishing 5-6, scoring twice and driving in a run.

After starting their season with 13 road contests, the Sailfish are finally heading home. PBA returns to action this Friday night, Feb. 24 as they take on Rollins College in their home opener, in game one of a three-game weekend series. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m., with games two and three scheduled for Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.

GAME ONE: PBA 2 Wingate 0

Wagner pitched an absolute gem in the opener Sunday afternoon to pick up her first win of the season. The Wadsworth, Ill. native collected her third career complete-game shutout, as she threw one last year at home on April 1 in a 2-0 win over Tampa, and at Florida Southern in a 4-0 win her Freshman year on March 21, 2015.

Sunday was the Wagner’s first start on the season, and she absolutely dominated the Bulldogs on the day. After allowing two Wingate hits in the first inning and one hit in the second, Wagner retired the remaining 16 batters of the game, finishing the final five innings in perfect fashion.

While only picking up two strikeouts on the day, Wagner used the fly out to her advantage, forcing 15 fly outs while the Bulldogs only grounded out four times.

Knight provided all of the offense needed for the Sailfish in game one, as the senior led off the bottom of the first with an infield single and later scoring on a sacrifice fly. Knight later drove in Alexis Guerra on a single to center in the bottom of the fourth, giving the Sailfish a 2-0 advantage.

GAME TWO: PBA 6 Flagler 3

Trailing 2-0 to the Saints heading into the top of the fourth inning, Shelby Wood got the offense going as she picked up her first hit of the season, a solo homer to left. Maddie Bertisch followed with an infield single and later tied the game scoring on a sacrifice fly.

The ‘Fish scored two more runs in the top of the fifth as Knight got things going with double to center. She later broke the tie scoring on an error by the Saints’ third baseman. The Sailfish picked up their second run of the inning the very next batter, as Michaela Hynes drove in Magnolia West on an infield groundout, putting the ‘Fish up 4-2.

The Sailfish extended their lead in the top of the sixth inning when Maddie Biggs singled home Bertisch, giving PBA a 5-2 lead.

The Saints struck back for a run of their own in the bottom of the sixth, but the Sailfish responded once again, scoring a run in the top of the seventh, putting PBA ahead 6-3.

Ashton Adkins went the distance in the circle for the Sailfish in the finale, as the junior picked up her fourth win of the year. Adkins retired eight consecutive batters from the third inning until the end of the fifth, allowing the Sailfish offense to do their job giving PBA the lead during that time frame.
