Men's Basketball Holds On To Beat Eckerd On The Road

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.- For the first time since November 24, 2008, Palm Beach Atlantic men's basketball team (13-11, 9-8 SSC) defeated the Eckerd College Tritons (18-7, 11-5 SSC) in the McArthur Center in St. Petersburg, Fla. on the campus of Eckerd College by a final score of 73-71.
With the game tied at 20 with 8:10 remaining in the first half, the Sailfish capitalized on a 14-7 run to put the ‘Fish up by seven before the Tritons knocked down two free throws to end the opening period.
The first five minutes of the second half was a back and forth affair as the game was tied back up for the seventh time at the 15:13 mark at 40. The Sailfish then outscored the Tritons 31-20 over the next 13 minutes of play to give Palm Beach Atlantic their widest margin of the game at 11 with 2:12 left to play.
The final two minutes of the second half all belonged to the Tritons as Eckerd outscored PBA 11-2, but the made bucket from Dakota Zinser down the stretch gave the Sailfish the boost they needed to hang on to the 73-71 victory over the Tritons.
Shavanno Cooper led the Sailfish in points on the evening, hitting 9-of-11 attempts from the field, including his only shot from distance while hitting 2-of-3 from the stripe to tie his career-high 21 points.
Finishing with 14 points on the night hitting 6-of-11 from the field was sophomore Malek Barber. The North Port, Fla. native also snagged five rebounds, dished out an assist and swiped two steals.
Grant Gullett also finished in double figures, finishing with 12 on the night, thanks in part to his perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line.
As a team, the Sailfish shot 46.7 (28-of-60) percent from the field, while hitting 31.3 (5-of-16) percent from behind the arc. They also knocked down 70.6 (12-of-17) percent from the stripe.
The Sailfish return to action for the final regular season game in the Rubin Arena for the 2016-2017 season, as the ‘Fish host Embry-Riddle on Senior Night, Feb. 22, with tipoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
