Sailfish Take Game Two In Extras To Split Day One Of The Flagler Classic

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla.- Palm Beach Atlantic softball (5-6) split their opening day of the 2017 Flagler Classic at Flagler Field Saturday afternoon. The Sailfish fell to the host Flagler Saints 6-1 in the opener and defeated the Wingate Bulldogs 5-4 in extra innings in the final game of the day.
The Sailfish return to St. Augustine, Fla. tomorrow to take on the same two institutions on the final day of the 2017 Flagler Classic. The ‘Fish will take on the Bulldogs in the opener and will take on the Saints directly following, with first pitch against the Bulldogs scheduled for noon.
GAME ONE PBA 1 Flagler 6
The host Saints had their way with the Sailfish in the opener of the 2017 Flagler Classic, as the Sailfish only scored one run in the contest, and only snagged one hit.
The ‘Fish scored their only run of the ballgame in the top of the first courtesy of two Flagler errors and a wild pitch. Claudia Pizzarelli reached first on by the pitcher and later made her way to third base. She later came scored the lone Sailfish run of the game on a wild pitch, giving PBA an early 1-0 lead.
The Saints quickly responded with three runs of their own courtesy of four hits in the bottom of the first. Flagler later added on a run on three hits in the third inning, and their final two runs in the fourth inning on three hits and one Sailfish error, extending their lead to 6-1.
Flagler’s Ally Marcano was the story of game one, as she pitched all seven innings, only allowing one Sailfish hit. She picked up 15 strikeouts while not allowing an earned run.
GAME TWO PBA 5 Wingate 4 (8 Inn.)
Trailing 4-2 in the top of the seventh inning, the Sailfish put together three clutch base hits to tie the ballgame sending it to extras. Noelle McGuire and Kayla Knight led off the inning with singles to the outfield to get the rally going. Following a sacrifice bunt, Magnolia West drove in McGuire on a ground out to second to cut the deficit to 4-3. Alexis Brown picked up the third hit of the inning, a single center field that drove in Knight to tie the game up at four.
Maddie Biggs was placed at second base to start off the top of the eighth inning for the Sailfish. After a sacrifice bunt moved her over to third, Alexis Guerra singled home Biggs to give PBA the 5-4 lead in extra innings.
The Sailfish scored their first run of the day in the top of the first and held on to a 1-0 lead until the Bulldogs equalized things in the bottom of the second. When the ‘Fish jumped ahead 2-1 in the third, the Bulldogs answered with a run of their own as well.
The Bulldogs separated things in the bottom of the sixth as they jumped ahead 4-2 thanks to two hits and a Sailfish error.
After the Sailfish tied the game and eventually took the lead, the Bulldogs threatened once again in the eighth but were shut down on a double play, as Knight made a catch in left field and threw out the Bulldog runner at the plate to end the game with the ‘Fish winning 5-4.
Ashton Adkins picked up her third win of the season in the circle for the ‘Fish, as the junior went the distance, picking up five strikeouts.
