WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- Continuing to stockpile talented ball players from around the diamond, Palm Beach Atlantic University head baseball coach Rob Avila has announced yet another recruit signing for the 2009 season in talented right-hander Carlos Hechavarria Jr.
A standout for Monsignor Edward Pace High School in Miami, Florida, Hechavarria inked his national letter of intent to further his education and play baseball at a recent ceremony for all the spring athletes signing to play collegiate sports at Edward Pace.
An All-State and 1st Team All-Dade County selection for his efforts as a pitcher and infielder, Hechavarria brings Avila not only a talented arm to the pitching staff but an impact player off the field as well.
“Carlos is very polished as a pitcher will make an impact right away,” said Avila. “He will add depth because of his ability to start or come in late in the game and close it out. We are very blessed to have Carlos and his family joining the Sailfish family,” continued Avila.
While playing for the Spartans under head coach Tom Duffin, Hechavarria not only excelled on the field but in the classroom as well as he was named to the Principal’s Honor Roll during his time in the prep ranks.
While the transition to college from an academic standpoint can be tough on some student-athletes, Hechavarria appears poised to make a smooth transition as he plans to major in PBA’s highly-acclaimed Pharmacy program.
"Its a true blessing to be able to represent PBA in the community and on the diamond,” said Hechavarria upon his signing.
Joining talented returning pitchers such as Buddy Fisher and Taylor McBath, Hechavarria will be counted on along with a host of other talented newcomers to help fill out the Sailfish pitching staff.
