Men's Basketball Picks Up Season Sweep Over Saint Leo

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- Palm Beach Atlantic men’s basketball (12-11, 8-8 SSC) defeated Saint Leo University (12-13, 6-9 SSC) 76-65 in the Rubin Arena Wednesday night, completing the season sweep over the Lions.
Trailing the Lions 19-14 with 13:10 left to play in the first half, the Sailfish capitalized on a 15-0 run over the next six minutes, shifting momentum in their favor. Following the run, the Lions were marginally able to cut into the deficit, but the Sailfish responded with a 7-0 run of their own, thanks to a free throw, four points from Cory Kenning, and a Bakari Warthen dunk to close out the final two and a half minutes of the opening half, with PBA leading 46-32 at the break.
The Sailfish opened the first 6:45 of the second half on a 12-0 run, extending their lead to 58-32 over Saint Leo. While the Lions were able to chip away at their 26-point deficit, the Sailfish finished the remainder of the ballgame with a double-digit lead, ending with a final score of 76-65.
As a team, the Sailfish knocked down 46.9 (28-61) percent from the field, while hitting 44.4 (4-of-9) percent from behind the arc. The Sailfish were successful on 64 (16-of-25) percent attempts from the charity stripe as well.
Leading the ‘Fish in scoring on the night, Grant Gullett finished with 16 points. Wednesday night was the 13th time on the year the Pflugerville, Texas native led the Sailfish in points. The junior was 6-of-12 from the field and 4-of-8 from the stripe. Dakota Zinser finished with 15 points, hitting 6-of-8 from the field while making his only attempt from long range. The junior grabbed three boards and swiped two steals on the night as well.
Hitting 4-of-8 from the field and adding 3-of-4 from the free-throw line, Michael Stones finished his evening with 11 points. The junior also grabbed three rebounds, dished out two assists and picked up a steal.
Shavanno Cooper wiped the glass 13 times on the night for the Sailfish, leading the way as the only member of the Blue and White in double figures in the category.
The Sailfish hit the road for their next contest, as they head to St. Petersburg to take on the Eckerd College Tritons on Saturday, Feb. 18. The two teams are set for a 4 p.m. tipoff. It has been awhile since the ‘Fish have left Rubin Arena, as the last time PBA played a road game was back on Jan. 11 against Barry.
