WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic University baseball was outmatched Tuesday night by the No. 1 ranked Nova Southeastern Sharks, falling by a 14-5 final score. The Sailfish sit at 5-3 on the season, as all eight games to date count as South Region games. The defending National Champion Sharks improve to 7-2 on the season with the win.
The Sailfish got off to a rough start, as starting pitcher Sean Horner (Loss, 0-1) was touched up for six runs in the first two innings of play. The offense for the ‘Fish did their best early on to keep them in the game, as Noah Johnson singled and scored on a Kyle Simon single in the first inning. The ‘Fish scored three in the second, as Jake Summey drove in Ryan Johnson with a sacrifice fly to left field. Another Noah Johnson single scored freshman Blake Beyel in the inning, and Sean Visconti crushed a line drive off Shark starter Kyle Kilbourne’s leg, scoring Evan Dougherty and forcing Kilbourne out of the game.
Nova Southeastern added to their lead with two in the fourth, one in the fifth, and five in the sixth off the Sailfish bullpen. The ‘Fish were unable to cut into the Shark lead until the eighth, when they would score their final run of the night on an RBI groundout from Kevin Fry, which scored Robert Campo.
The Sailfish got two scoreless innings of relief from sophomore Justin Hernandez in the game, and a scoreless ninth inning from sophomore Sam Shields.
Three Sailfish picked up multiple hits on the night, as Dougherty, Visconti, and Noah Johnson all finished with two hits.
The Sailfish will welcome Flagler College to Rubin Park for a three-game series beginning Friday, Feb. 17 at 6 p.m. The series will conclude Saturday, as the two teams will play a doubleheader which will begin at noon.
