Sailfish Drop Close Battle to No. 33 Flagler

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – In a battle of ranked teams the No. 46 Sailfish came up just short against No. 33 in Palm Beach Atlantic’s home opener on Sunday, falling 5-4 to the Saints.

The ‘Fish (1-1) got off to a good start in doubles, taking both No. 1 and No. 2 to hold the early advantage. Rafael Lenz and Bernardo Ferreira were winners at the top flight with Pato Zarazua and Pietro de Silva also winning at No. 2. Both duos remain unbeaten in the young season. At No. 3 the Sailfish were unable to hold a late lead as Philipp Hoffmann and Thomas Salmon were upended late 8-6 by Konstantin Dustmann and Daniel Arrien.

PBA took a 4-3 lead in the match after Hoffmann came off the court a winner over No. 24 Hermann Gertmann in three sets. The second flight was back-and-forth with Hoffmann taking the opener 6-0 before Gertmann returned the favor in the second. In the final set Hoffmann was able to pull the ‘Fish within one point of victory with a 6-4 lead.

The final two matches to end both went to the visiting Saints, as both No. 6 and No. 3 were close. At No. 6 Thomas Salmon forced a third set with a 6-4 victory in the second but Arrien came back to take the final set 6-2. At No. 3 Lenz narrowly dropped the opening set as Bolla won 9-7 in a tiebreak. Bolla went on to win the second 6-3.

Bernardo Ferreira was the only one winner for the Sailfish in single play as the freshman improved to 2-0 on the season. Ferreira took down Felipe Carvalho in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 to join fellow freshman Hoffmann as the only Sailfish to remain unbeaten.

The Sailfish will have nearly two weeks between matches, hosting No. 8 Lynn University on Feb. 24 at 4 p.m.
