WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic women’s tennis was unable to upset the No. 12 team in the country on Sunday afternoon, falling 8-1 to Flagler College at the Mitch Gornto Tennis Center.
The Sailfish (1-1) dropped their home opener and were unable to overcome the firepower of the Saints (3-1). Flagler took all three doubles matches with Romina Bolagay and Michaela Mignemi giving the ‘Fish their best showing at No. 3 but ultimately fell 8-4 to Felicitas Runkel and Hilary Hanton. The Saints took the top two doubles flights by scores of 8-2 and 8-1.
In singles play it was Mignemi earning the only victory on the day for PBA, winning at No. 6 against Hanton. Mignemi is the lone Sailfish to remain unbeaten on the young season at 2-0. The Sailfish were able to only win four games between flights three and five.
In the top two flights the Sailfish were able to hang with the Saints despite Flagler coming away with the victories. At No. 1 Valerie Nagovitcina took the first set from nationally ranked Lizanne Jinkertz 6-2 only to have Jinkertz come back to take the second 6-4 to force the third. In that third set it was Jinkertz who came out on top 10-7. It was a similar story at the No. 2 match as Leoni Polzin was the one to force a third set after winning the second 6-3 over Mary Jo Nanti. Nanti took the third 10-4 after winning the opener 6-2.
The Sailfish will be back in action next weekend, travelling to Tampa on Saturday, Feb. 11 for a 1 p.m. match against the Spartans. The ‘Fish will also take on No. 38 Rollins next Sunday in Winter Park at 1 p.m.
