DAHLONEGA, Ga.- Palm Beach Atlantic softball (4-5) were two outs shy of victory Sunday morning before McKendree University (3-2) blasted back-to-back homers to tie the ballgame in the top of the seventh.
Leading 5-2 in the top of the seventh with one out looked like a sure-fire victory for the Sailfish as they were gearing up to head back to South Florida 5-4 overall and 4-1 on the weekend. The Bearcats sent Abbi Liske to the plate with a runner on and one away to face Jana Wagner in a pinch-hit situation. Liske blasted a two-run homer to bring the game within one, and the Sailfish responded with a call to the bullpen bringing in Nikki Brinegar to face Brooke Gajewski. She sent a solo shot over the left field fence to tie the contest at 5.
Neither team scored again until the top of the tenth inning when McKendree’s placed runner scored on a wild pitch, giving the Bearcats their 6-5 lead.
The ‘Fish got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning as their offense struck for three early runs. Noelle McGuire picked up the only RBI in the inning as she singled home Maddie Bertisch. Two other ‘Fish came in to score on a throwing error by the Bearcats second baseman.
McKendree scored their first two runs of the game in the top of the fifth inning capitalizing on three hits and a Sailfish error.
The ‘Fish scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth as Magnolia West tripled home Loren Kilgore, and West scored a run herself as Alexis Brown singled her home, putting the Sailfish up 5-2.
Brown led the way for the Sailfish as she picked up three hits on the day while driving in one of the three PBA RBIs.
In the circle, Ashton Adkins pitched four complete innings without allowing a run Sunday morning. She only allowed two Bearcats to get on via a hit, and picked up a strike out.
The Sailfish return to the Sunshine State as they head to the Flagler Classic located in St. Augustine, Fla. The Sailfish will play in four games during Feb. 18 and 19.
The ‘Fish will make their long-awaited home opener on Friday, Feb. 24 as they host Rollins College in a three-game series with game one starting Friday night and games two and three Saturday afternoon.
