Sailfish Split Day Two of Steak And Shake Classic

Dahlonega, Ga.- Palm Beach Atlantic softball split their two games on Saturday, and are now 4-4 on the season. The Sailfish defeated Mars Hill 8-2 in the opener, and fell 10-3 to the tournament host, No. 8 University of North Georgia.
Kayla Knight was a key part of the Sailfish offense on the day, picking up six hits, driving in four, and scoring four runs in the two games. Of her six hits, three were for extra bases as the senior hit her first home run of the year, added a double and triple as well.
The Sailfish return for the third and final day of the Steak and Shake Classic tomorrow, Feb. 12, for one last game as they play McKendree for the second time in the weekend, with first pitch scheduled for 10 a.m.
Game One: PBA 8 Mars Hill 2
The Sailfish offense exploded in the opener, scoring eight runs in a span of three innings. The big inning for the ‘Fish came in the top of the 5th when the offense put a five spot up on the board, sealing the deal on the victory in game one.
Knight got her day started in the top of the second inning in game one, driving in Brianna Skipper and Alexis Guerra on her first double of the day.
The ‘Fish added a run to their lead just an inning later when Alexis Brown doubled home a runner, putting the ‘Fish up 3-0. The Mars Hill Lions scored their two runs of the ballgame in the bottom of the third inning as Kaleigh Jonas doubled in a pair of runners.
The Sailfish offense opened up the game in the top of the fifth, scoring five runs on five hits in the inning. Knight picked up her second triple of the game as she drove in Skipper for the second time in the ballgame. In the inning, the ‘Fish put together a triple, a double, and three singles en route to the five runs.
Nikki Brinegar (W, 2-2) went the distance in her second consecutive start. The southpaw struck out four lions while only allowing two earned runs in the game.
Game Two: PBA 3 #8 UNG 10
The Sailfish offense was sparse in game two, as Palm Beach Atlantic only scored three runs while only picking up four hits as a team. Of those four hits, three of them belonged to Knight in the leadoff spot, and West picked up the only other hit of the day.
The No. 8 North Georgia squad got on the board first in the top of the first, courtesy of a Sydney Sprague solo home run. The ‘Fish equalized things a half inning later as Knight scored from a Magnolia West double. The Nighthawks responded with five unanswered runs, scoring three runs on two hits in the top of the second, and adding two runs on two hits in the top of the third, putting themselves out in front 6-1.
The Sailfish scored their second run of the contest as Knight scored from third on an infield ground out by Brown.
North Georgia added four more in the top of the ‘Fifth, putting them ahead 10-2. The Sailfish scored their final run in the bottom half of the fifth inning on a home run from Knight.
Three Sailfish saw action in the circle in game two. Ashton Adkins went 1.1 innings pitched, was charged with the loss, her first of the year and is now 2-1 on the season. Brinnegar picked up a bunch of innings in relief, going for 4.2 innings. Jana Wagner finished things off for the ‘Fish in the circle, pitching the final inning.
