Game One: PBA 2 McK 1
The Sailfish offense only mustered up two runs in Friday’s opening game, but those two were all that were needed, as they defeated the McKendree Bearcats 2-1 in 8 innings.
Claudia Pizzarelli scored the go-ahead run for the Sailfish in the top of the 8th inning, after leading off with a bunt single. Pizzarelli later scored the run two batters later as she scored from second base off of an error by the Bearcat’s centerfielder.
The ‘Fish took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning after Maddie Bertisch kept the inning alive with a two-out single. After stealing both second and third base, Bertisch came in to score on a throwing error by the Bearcats’ shortstop.
McKendree scored their lone run of the ballgame in the bottom of the third inning as the Bearcats picked up three singles, driving in a run.
PBA had a chance in the fourth inning to retake the lead, picking up three hits but were unable to get a runner beyond second base in the inning.
Ashton Adkins (W, 2-0) picked up her second win of the year, pitching all eight innings in the opener. The junior struck out five Bearcats while only allowing the one earned run.
Game Two: PBA 9 UWG 5
The offense came alive for the Sailfish in the second game, as they scored a season-high nine runs en route to the victory. West carried the Sailfish in the win over West Georgia, with two two-RBI base hits in the contest.
Maddie Biggs got the offense started in the second game, ripping a double to left-center field, driving in two runs to put the ‘Fish up 2-0.
Leading 2-1 in the bottom of the third inning, Alexis Brown singled home West to put the ‘Fish ahead 3-1. The Wolves retaliated however, tacking on four runs from three hits and two Sailfish errors to give West Georgia a 5-3 lead in the top of the fourth.
Following three consecutive singles from Bertisch, Kayla Knight, and Pizzarelli to lead off the bottom of the fourth, West followed suit with a single of her own driving in Bertisch and Knight, tying the game at 5. Biggs gave the lead right back to PBA with a sacrifice fly to center that scored Pizzarelli.
Leading 7-5 over the Wolves, West did it again in the bottom of the fifth, doubling home Pizzarelli and Knight to extend the Sailfish lead to 9-5.
Nikki Brinegar (W, 1-2) earned her first win of the 2017 campaign as the southpaw went the distance Friday afternoon. The senior struck out a pair, induced seven ground outs and 10 fly outs.
