Four-Run Sixth Inning Lifts Sailfish Past Nova In Final Day of Florida Tech Marriott First Pitch Classic

MELBOURNE, Fla.- Palm Beach Atlantic softball (1-3) picked up their first win of the 2017 campaign Sunday morning, as they defeated Nova Southeastern 6-2 in the final game of the Florida Tech Marriott First Pitch Classic. Kayla Knight paced the offense for the Sailfish, as the senior picked up three hits, driving in two runs and scoring two runs as well. Tied at two, the Sailfish offense exploded for four runs in the sixth inning to jump out to the final 6-2 score.
The Sailfish got things going in the first inning as Knight scored her first run on a wild pitch, after reaching base via a single to centerfield to lead off the inning. Nova responded in the top of the fourth as the Sharks plated two runs courtesy of three hits and a Sailfish error.
Claudia Pizzarelli got the offense going in the fifth inning reaching on a fielder’s choice, and advanced to second on a Magnolia West walk. Alexis Brown delivered a pinch-hit single that scored Pizzarelli, tying the game at two.
Noelle McGuire and Alexis Guerra led off the bottom of the sixth inning with singles for PBA, and both runners advanced to scoring position courtesy of Hannah Carlton’s sacrifice bunt. The following batter, Knight slapped a double down the left field line scoring both McGuire and Guerra to put the ‘Fish ahead 4-2. Pizzarelli followed up with a single to center that drove in Knight, and then West singled through the left side to drive in Pizzarelli, giving the Sailfish their 6-2 lead, the final score of the game.
Ashton Adkins (W, 1-0) picked up her first win in the circle as a Sailfish, pitching a complete game Sunday morning. The junior only allowed two earned runs while striking out four Sharks.
The Sailfish continue their road trip to start the season, as they head north to Dahlonega, Ga. where they will play five games in the Steak and Shake Classic Hosted by The University of North Georgia. The ‘Fish will play two games February 10, two on the 11th, and one on the 12th before heading back to the Sunshine State.
The Sailfish open their short home season on Friday, February 24 as they host Rollins College at Simpson Field at 7 p.m.
