WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Junior Jake Summey grounded an 0-2 pitch through the right side of the infield, scoring Eddie Vicinanza and giving Palm Beach Atlantic their first win of the 2017 season. The win improves the ‘Fish to 1-1 while Tusculum College drops to 0-2 on the year.
Mitchell Carroll got the start for the Sailfish, and took a shutout into the fifth inning, where he began to fatigue, walking three Pioneers in the inning and giving up four runs.
Tusculum held a 5-1 lead into the bottom of the sixth, and Pioneer starter Ethan Carpenter had the Sailfish’s number on the day, only allowing two hits through the first five innings. Noah Johnson led off the sixth inning with a single, and after an Evan Dougherty bunt single and a Jake Summey fielder’s choice, senior Sean Visconti put a charge into a ball, sending it to deep left field, but it was caught by the left fielder for a sacrifice fly. Peter Rivera drove in another run with a RBI single later in the frame.
The ‘Fish scored two more runs in the seventh inning, when Johnson and Dougherty both lined singles, and with two outs, Visconti laced a 2-2 pitch into the left field corner, scoring both runners, and tying the game.
After great work by the Sailfish bullpen, which totaled 4.2 innings of one-run baseball from Blake Beyel, Sam Shields, and Joey Hennessey, the ‘Fish came to bat in the bottom of the ninth with the score tied at five.
Vicinanza lined an 0-2 pitch through the left side to start the inning, and was sacrificed to second by Johnson, who finished the day 3-3 at the plate. An intentional walk to Dougherty allowed for Summey to reach the plate and deliver the walk-off single.
Hennessey (Win, 1-0) earned the win in his first collegiate appearance, throwing 1.2 innings of hitless, scoreless baseball out of the Sailfish bullpen.
The ‘Fish will return to Rubin Park Sunday for a noon start against Alabama-Huntsville to conclude their first weekend of games.
