WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- For the second year in a row, Palm Beach Atlantic men’s basketball (9-9, 5-6 SSC) have swept their cross-county rivals, the Lynn University Fighting Knights (10-8, 5-6 SSC). Wednesday night’s win over the Fighting Knights did not come easy for the ‘Fish, as they defeated Lynn 62-60 at home in the Rubin Arena. Sophomore Bakari Warthen exploded for 24 points on the night, the only Sailfish in double-figures.
The Sailfish jumped out to an early lead in thanks to a 7-0 run to start the contest over the first two minutes. Their lead quickly evaporated as Lynn went on an 11-0 run of their own to capture an 11-7 lead just six minutes into action. Both teams scrapped away at each other over the next five minutes and were all even with 7:56 to go in the half before the Fighting Knights went on a 12-4 run to end the half, putting them out in front 27-19.
Neither team shot well in the first half, as Lynn only connected on 38.5 (10-of-26) percent in the first half, better than PBA’s 27.3 (6-of-22) percent from the field. Both teams heated up in the second half however, as the Sailfish landed 51.7 (15-of-29) percent from the field and Lynn shot 45.8 (11-of-24) percent.
The ‘Fish got off to a hot start in the second half, quickly erasing their nine-point deficit over the opening six minutes of the half, taking a 36-35 lead courtesy of a Shavanno Cooper three-pointer. Then both teams continued to battle each other back and forth, with neither team extending a lead greater than five points.
The momentum changer in the game came with 3 minutes and 52 seconds left on the clock, as Warthen hammered down a highlight reel dunk over Lynn’s Vieux Kande, sending the crowd into a frenzy. The dunk tied the game at 54, and Warthen’s completed and-one that followed gave the ‘Fish a lead.
With the game tied at 60 with 1:50 remaining, the Sailfish forced three Fighting Knight turnovers and two bad shots from Lynn, while hitting a pair of free throws of their own to secure the 62-60 victory.
Warthen finished the night with 24 points, while also grabbing six rebounds, and an assist, a block, and two steals.
Malek Barber led the team grabbing eight rebounds while Michael Stones led the team dishing out five assists.
The Sailfish return to action Saturday afternoon, as they host the Rollin College Tars in the Rubin Arena beginning at 4:00 p.m.
