Zinser Leads The Way As The Sailfish Defeat The Spartans

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- Palm Beach Atlantic men’s basketball (8-9, 4-6 SSC) snapped their four-game losing streak Saturday afternoon, defeating the University of Tampa (13-6, 6-4 SSC) 72-62 in the Rubin Arena. The Sailfish were led on the afternoon by Dakota Zinser, as the junior broke his career-high for the second time in as many games, finishing with 23 points on the afternoon.
The Sailfish jumped out to a hot start Saturday afternoon, quickly earning a 28-8 lead over the first 13 minutes of the first half. While the ‘Fish eventually spread their lead to 22 at on point in the half, the Spartans chipped away bringing the first half to a 38-22 advantage for PBA. As a team, the Sailfish shot 55.2 (16-of-29) percent from the field, trumping Tampa’s ice cold 26.9 (7-of-26) percent to start the game.
The ‘Fish were charged by Zinser’s hot shooting in the first half, as the junior scored 19 of his 23 points in the opening frame. Zinser shot a perfect 7-for-7, knocking down 5-of-5 from distance to open the ballgame.
The Sailfish 14-point lead in the second half shrunk over the first ten minutes of the second half until Tampa’s Austin Rettig hit from distance to give the Spartans a two-point lead at the 9:58 mark, their first lead of the ballgame. The Spartans ran their lead to seven points with 7:50 remaining in the contest, but the Sailfish responded with a run of their own, finishing the contest on a 23-6 run, giving Palm Beach Atlantic their 72-62 win over Tampa.
Sophomore Bakari Warthen finished second on the afternoon in scoring, as the West Palm Beach, Fla. native finished with 15 points, while grabbing six rebounds.
For the ninth time this year in only his tenth game of the season, Grant Gullett finished in double-digit scoring, as the junior finished with a 13. The Pflugerville, Texas native also grabbed four rebounds, with three of them coming on the offensive side of the glass.
Malek Barber finished the afternoon with an even 10 points, but had an impressive day overall, as he led the Sailfish in rebounds with eight, assists with five, and steals with three.
Rettig led the Spartans in scoring Saturday afternoon, finishing with 17 points. He also grabbed four rebounds and two assists.
The Sailfish return to action Wednesday, Jan. 25 as the continue their home stand against cross-county rivals Lynn University. The game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.
