WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Palm Beach Atlantic University has once again been named a finalist for the NCAA II Award of Excellence. The top prizes will be announced on Jan. 21 at the 2017 NCAA Convention in Nashville, Tennessee.
This past summer multiple departments on campus launched “Speak Out Sailfish” (SOS) to speak out against sexual misconduct and assault and to provide education to the campus community. The “Speak Out Sailfish” campaign is a branded campus initiative derived from Proverbs 31:8 which says, “Speak out for those who cannot speak, and for the rights of those who are left without help.”
Since the launch of the program a number of topics have been covered on campus including: education on consent; education on sexual assault, misconduct and harassment; education on PBA’s Title IX policies and procedures; and bystander intervention training. Over 1,000 people have received education and training since the launch of the joint program between athletics, human resources, student development and leadership as well as the Title IX office.
In addition to the program the following PSA was shown to urge the PBA community to speak out.
Each of the 25 finalists for the NCAA II Award of Excellence were awarded $500 with the winner receiving $1,500 and a nationally televised football or basketball game during the 2017-18 year. The first runner-up will receive $1,250 and the second runner-up will receive $1,000. All prize money is expected to be used on future community engagement initiatives.
