Sailfish Rally Falls Short Wednesday Night Against The Tritons

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.- The Sailfish fell just short of a monumental comeback Wednesday night in the Rubin Arena against Eckerd College. Palm Beach Atlantic trailed by 19 points with ten minutes remaining eventually got the game down to a six-point game in the final minute of regulation, but were unable to complete the comeback as the Tritons outlasted the Sailfish 83-74. With the loss, Palm Beach Atlantic fall to 7-6 (3-3, SSC) on the year while Eckerd advances to 11-2 (4-1, SSC).
Both teams came our evenly matched in the first half, as neither team saw a lead larger than four points for the first 10 minutes of the game. The Tritons then spent the next seven minutes outscoring the ‘Fish 21-8, extending their lead to 18 points. The Sailfish ended the final three minutes of the half on a 6-2 run to close out the half with Eckerd leading 45-31.
The Tritons opened the first four minutes of the second half on a 14-0 run spreading their lead to 28 points at the 16:13 mark. While the Sailfish chipped away slowly, they trailed by double digits until the 3:37 mark in the second half on a Matthew Johnson fast break layup in the paint. Two minutes later, the ‘Fish got the game within two possessions, but the Tritons closed out the final minute of the game hitting 4-of-7 from the free throw line to seal their victory, 83-74.
Leading the Sailfish offensively on the night was Grant Gullett. The junior finished the night with 14 points and three assists. The Pflugerville, Texas native also swiped two steals and added a block on the night.
Bakari Warthen also finished with 14 points on the night. The sophomore added a pair of assists, a block, and a pair of steals on the night.
Leading the way in both assists, with seven, and steals, with three, Shavanno Cooper also finished with a double-digit scoring outing, as the senior from Freeport Bahamas finished with a dozen on the night.
As a team, the ‘Fish shot 43.1 (28-of-65) percent from the field, hitting only 20 (3-of-15) percent from distance. The Tritons finished shooting 48.4 (31-of-64) percent from the field while hitting 37.5 (6-of-16) percent from downtown.
The majority of the offense for the Tritons came from Drushaun McLaurn and Kevin Walsh, as the two of them combined for 50 of the team’s 83 points on the night.
The Sailfish return to action this Saturday, January 7, in Winter Park, Fla. as they take on the Rollins College Tars with a scheduled tip-off of 4 pm.
