Sailfish Fall in Opening Contest of 2017

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – Ayanna Holmes recorded another double-double but it wasn’t enough for the Sailfish on Wednesday night as they fell to Eckerd College 71-53 in Rubin Arena.
Holmes scored 23 and pulled down 18 rebounds including 13 on the defensive glass but the Sailfish shot just 36 percent in the game as the Tritons remained unbeaten in conference games. The Sailfish fell to 5-8 overall and 1-5 in conference games. The Tritons improved to 11-2 overall and 5-0 in the SSC.
Nikkira Brown added 14 points off the bench for the ‘Fish, making 4-of-9 from the floor and the only two triples for the Sailfish on the night. The senior also made 4-of-5 from the free throw line. Hannah Grim added eight points in just 12 minutes as she battle foul trouble all night.
The Tritons jumped out to a 22-5 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. PBA outscored Eckerd in the second half 32-29 and pulled within 15 early in the fourth quarter but were never able to make a run to close the gap.
PBA shot 50 percent in the second half after just 25 percent in the first half. The Tritons shot 48 percent in each half and made 6-of-18 from long range. PBA outrebounded Eckerd 35-28 largely due to Holmes.
The Sailfish are back in action on Saturday as they take on Rollins in Winter Park at 2 p.m. PBA returns to Rubin Arena on Jan. 14 to take on Florida Tech.
