Holmes' Double-Double Leads Sailfish to 86-80 Overtime Win Over Saint Leo

ST. LEO, Fla.- Ayanna Holmes’ double-double led the charge Friday afternoon as the Palm Beach Atlantic women’s basketball team overcame a 15-point halftime deficit in the Marion Bowman Activity Center on the campus of Saint Leo University, to defeat the Lions 86-80 in overtime, advancing to 5-7 overall, earning their first Sunshine State Conference win of the year.

The Sailfish and Lions came out of the gates evenly matched as both teams knocked down seven field goals in the opening ten minutes of play ending the first quarter 14-14.

The second quarter fared a different story for the Sailfish, unfortunately, as the Lions connected on 50 (8-of-16) percent from the field as the ‘Fish only made 23.1 (3-of-13) percent of their shots in the quarter, with all three going for three. The Sailfish were outscored 26-11 in the quarter, giving Saint Leo a 40-25 advantage heading into the half.

The Sailfish came out of the locker room looking to bring things closer in the third quarter, and that is what they did. The Sailfish shot 43.8 (7-of-16) percent in the quarter, almost double their second quarter performance. While the ‘Fish shot better in the third, the Lions kept pace as PBA only outscored Saint Leo 18-15 in the third quarter, sending the game to the fourth quarter 55-43 in favor of the Lions.

Momentum remained in favor of PBA in the fourth quarter, as the Sailfish erased the 12-point deficit, shooting 50 (8-of-16) percent from the field, connecting on 3-of-6 from distance. Down nine points with just under two minutes remaining, Hannah Grim connected on a triple to bring the game within six. A Lion turnover and foul on Grim, she knocked down both from the line to bring the ‘Fish within four, forcing a Lion timeout with 1:28 left to play. The ‘Fish out-scored the Lions down the stretch 9-0, jumping out to a 76-73 lead with 14 seconds remaining in regulation. Lighting struck for the Lions, as Madelin Lang banked in a long-distance three to tie the game in the final seconds of play.

Riding the momentum of the second half, the Sailfish outscored Saint Leo 10-4 in overtime, completing the comeback win 86-80.

Holmes led the way overall with her double-double, as the senior scored 16 points shooting 4-of-11 from the field while also hitting a perfect 7-of-7 from the stripe. She also grabbed 20 rebounds, with six of them coming on the offensive side.

Grim finished the afternoon shooting 40 (8-of-20) percent in the game, finishing with 24 points. She also grabbed seven rebounds and six steals.

The other two Sailfish in double figures, Rachael Holehouse and Mina Salhia, each finished with an even ten points in the contest. Holehouse shot 5-of-6 from the field, while Salhia was 3-of-4 including two from distance and added two from the stripe.

Overall, the Sailfish shot 44.4 (28-of-63) percent from the field, while knocking down 36.8 (7-of-19) percent from long distance.

For the Lions, Chelsy Springs led the way scoring 21 points and grabbing 17 rebounds.

The ‘Fish return to action in the new year, as PBA hosts the Eckerd College Tritons Wednesday, Jan. 4 at 5:30 p.m.
