Sailfish Shake Off Slow Start, Defeat Shaw 71-65

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – After digging a 12-0 hole the Palm Beach Atlantic women’s basketball team stormed back to knock off Shaw University 71-65 on Sunday afternoon in the PBA Holiday Hoops Classic inside Rubin Arena.
Ayanna Holmes recorded a double-double with 23 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Sailfish (4-6) as they snapped a three-game losing streak. Holmes had 14 in the first half including connecting on three triples in the opening 20 minutes of play. It was Holmes who put the ‘Fish on the board in the opening quarter after Shaw (3-10) scored the first 12 points, Holmes connected from distance as PBA slowly started to work back into the game.
The Sailfish closed the opening quarter on a 7-1 run highlighted by a bucket at the end of the quarter by Jane Svilberg to bring the ‘Fish within three at 18-15. Shaw extended their lead to six twice in the second quarter but each time the ‘Fish closed the gap including to close the half. Hannah Grim connected on a trey as the buzzer sounded to end the half as the Sailfish went into the break down 35-33.
Holmes gave the Sailfish their first lead in the opening moments of the third quarter, knocking down anther triple. The teams traded buckets and the lead until the ‘Fish scored on a jumper by Svilberg to take a 50-49 lead into the final quarter. She finished with eight points off the bench.
A quick start in the final ten minutes by the ‘Fish pushed the lead out to four as Ciara Cumbie converted a three-point play. The Sailfish never pushed the lead past six but were able to secure the game in the final minute, making 3-of-4 at the free throw line and 2-of-3 from the floor.
In addition to Holmes’ big night, Grim added 12 points, four assists and five rebounds. Mina Salhia joined them in double figures with 10 points while adding three assists and four rebounds. Rachael Holehouse added four assists and six points as the Sailfish collected 16 assists on the night.
PBA shot 40.6 percent from the floor in the game and made 7-of-22 from long range. The Bears shot just 36.7 percent overall including 33 percent in the second half. They did get to the line more than PBA with 21 attempts compared to just 15 for the ‘Fish. Shaw made 14 of their 21 attempts while the ‘Fish were 8-of-15.
The Sailfish will close out the Holiday Hoops Classic on Monday afternoon, taking on No. 4 Bellarmine University at 2:30 p.m. Shaw will take on Florida Tech at 12:30 p.m. Bellarmine defeated FIT 68-61 in the first game on Sunday.
