Fourth Quarter Comeback Not Enough As Sailfish Fall 57-53 To Embry-Riddle

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.- A late fourth quarter comeback was not enough for the Sailfish Friday night, as the Palm Beach Atlantic women’s basketball team fell 57-52 to Embry-Riddle in the ICI Center in Daytona Beach, Fla. The loss is the third in a row for Palm Beach Atlantic and drops the ‘Fish to 3-6 on the year.
The Sailfish started slow Friday night as the Eagles jumped out to an early but minimal lead in the first quarter. The Sailfish never trailed by more than two possessions in the opening frame before outscoring the Eagles 6-1 over the final three minutes of the quarter to end the first quarter up 11-10.
The Eagles regained their lead in the second quarter, shooting 61.5 (8-of-13) percent from the field including a perfect 2-for-2 from distance, while the Sailfish only knocked down 15.8 (3-of-19) percent from the field. The Sailfish were held without a three-pointer in their seven attempts, and were outscored 18-7 in the second quarter.
The Sailfish shot better in the third quarter as they hit 42.9 (6-of-14) percent from the field. The ‘Fish also added a perfect 4-of-4 from the line to outscore the Eagles 16-12 in the quarter. The ‘Fish closed the gap in the third but were unable to bring it closer than four points.
Riding the momentum of the third quarter into the fourth, the Sailfish were able to erase their six-point deficit, bringing the game within one at the 7:49 mark. The Sailfish retook their first lead since the start of the second quarter at the 3:38 mark in the fourth as Caroline Patrick hit the only Sailfish three-pointer of the contest giving PBA a 50-49 lead.
Both the Eagles and Sailfish exchanged baskets in the closing minutes, but an Eagles three followed by a Sailfish turnover in the final 25 seconds of play closed out the game for Palm Beach Atlantic. The Eagles finished off the game with a made free throw in the final seconds to extend their lead to four points, the final score of 57-53.
Leading the Sailfish with her second double-double of the season, Ayanna Holmes scored 16 points and snagged 10 rebounds. The Jupiter, Fla. native shot 6-of-12 from the field, and hit 4-of-6 from the line.
Adding 11 point of her own, Nikkira Brown landed 3-of-6 from the field while connecting on 5-of-6 from the stripe.
The Sailfish have a quick turnaround, as they travel to DeLand, Fla. tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. 10 to take on Division I Stetson in an exhibition contest. The game will be available to watch on ESPN 3, and tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
