'Fish Storm Back to Snap Slide, Defeat Blazers 89-83

DAVIE, Fla. – Ayanna Holmes scored 26 points and grabbed nine rebounds as the Sailfish snapped a three-game slide, defeating Valdosta State 89-83 in the NSU Thanksgiving Classic at the NSU Arena.
The Sailfish (3-3) fell behind by double digits early in the first quarter before using a 14-4 run in the final 3:57 to take a 22-21 lead after the opening frame. The Sailfish made a pair of 3-pointers in the run and all six of their free throws.
The Blazers (2-3) took back the lead in the second quarter and led by as much as eight before the ‘Fish cut the margin to four before halftime. The Sailfish shot just 38.7 percent in the first half but connected on 5-of-10 from long range. Valdosta State made 7-of-19 from distance in the opening 20 minutes and shot 46.9 percent overall.
Holmes scored 15 of her game-high 26 points in the first half, making 4-of-6 from the floor. She took six trips to the line, making all six as the ‘Fish made all 12 attempts in the first half. Rachael Holehouse led the team in the second half, scoring 15 of her 17 as she made 7-of-9 from the free throw line. She also dished out five of her seven assists in the second half.
The Sailfish finally took control in the fourth quarter after the game’s 12th tie as Jane Svilberg connected on a jumper to give PBA a 73-71 lead. The lead quickly grew to six as the ‘Fish kept their distance the rest of the way.
Hannah Grim scored 11 of her 19 points in the second half including the only two treys for the ‘Fish in the half. She finished 4-of-5 from beyond the arc. Mina Salhia added 11 points for PBA with Ciara Cumbie adding six points and seven rebounds.
The Sailfish will continue their road swing as they travel to Tampa on Wednesday in a game that was moved from Rubin Arena due to the NCAA Volleyball Region Tournament. The Spartans will now come to West Palm Beach on Jan. 21. Tipoff on Wednesday is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
