Holmes' 18 Not Enough For 'Fish Against Armstrong State

DAVIE, Fla. – Ayanna Holmes led four players in double figures with 18 points but the Sailfish couldn’t overcome the Pirates of Armstrong State on Friday night, falling 84-73 in the NSU Thanksgiving Classic hosted by Nova Southeastern.
The Sailfish (2-3) fell behind in the first quarter by as much as eight and went into halftime down 42-35 after shooting 42 percent. Three players led the ‘Fish in scoring in the opening 20 minutes as Katie Meckus, Jane Svilberg and Holmes all had eight points through two quarters. Rachael Holehouse added four of her team-high six assists as well.
The Sailfish outshot the Pirates (3-3) on the night, 37 percent to 36 percent but ASU made 12 triples while the ‘Fish made just eight. Both teams struggled in the second half as the Sailfish shot just 33 percent in the final 20 minutes.
Armstrong pushed the lead out to 14 midway through the third but the ‘Fish rallied to cut the deficit back down to six at 60-54 with 43 seconds to go in the quarter. Armstrong outscored the ‘Fish 16-4 to start the fourth quarter to pull away as the Sailfish were unable to ever get the margin back to single digits.
In addition to Holmes’ 18 points, Svilberg added 13 off the bench as Mina Salhia scored 12. The PBA bench combined to score 49 points. Holehouse was the lone starter in double figures with 11 points. She also added seven rebounds to go with her six assists. Ciara Cumbie pulled down a career-high 17 rebounds as the Sailfish won the battle on the boards, 52-49.
The Sailfish will be back in action on Saturday as they take on Valdosta State at 4 p.m. in the finale of the NSU Thanksgiving Classic.
